Some bats are reservoirs for zoonotic viruses, but they also perform valuable ecosystem services, and their poor reputations are undeserved, scientists say. "Certainly in North America, we have made really serious inroads in bat conservation and in people's perceptions of bats," says wildlife extension specialist Joy O'Keefe.
