Nevada has banned the import of deer, elk and moose carcasses from out of state, and Minnesota is incinerating carcasses and has placed plastic-lined containers in areas where chronic wasting disease is present. Though human cases of CWD have not been documented, Michael Osterholm, who directs the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, says transmission to humans could occur when people eat infected meat.
