A young, critically ill Hawaiian monk seal brought from Kauai to the Marine Mammal Center's Hawaiian monk seal hospital on Hawaii was given a CT scan at a community hospital to determine the cause of her illness, and the CT scan may be a first for the species. The seal is malnourished and experiencing broad inflammation, and X-rays, ultrasound exams and blood tests have not revealed metals, foreign objects, toxins, viruses or parasites.
