There were 38 documented cases of raccoons with distemper last month in Port St. Lucie, Fla., compared with an average of three or four cases a month in recent years, and unvaccinated dogs have a high risk of catching the virus, says veterinarian Leonard Fox, who cares for sick animals captured by local animal control officers. Dr. Fox says he saw two dogs last month with distemper, whereas he usually sees one every couple of years.
