New rules in Canada to protect Southern resident orcas go further than measures approved by Washington state lawmakers and include steps to reduce vessel noise and disturbances. Certain areas of the Salish Sea will be closed to most boat traffic from June 1 through Oct. 31, vessels must stay 400 meters away from orcas and small vessels are asked to slow to 7 knots or below when within a kilometer of orcas.
