California State Veterinarian Annette Jones told state, county and city workers to avoid areas where poultry live except in cases of an imminent public health threat in an effort reduce spread of virulent Newcastle disease. More than 1.2 million birds in California have been culled amid an outbreak of the disease, which can be spread by people, equipment and vehicles, Dr. Jones said.
