Compounds derived from horseshoe crab blood have been used since the late 1970s to make a test for pathogenic bacteria in injectable medicines and vaccines, and that test -- the Limulus amebocyte lysate test -- will also be used to help ensure any COVID-19 vaccine is safe. Horseshoe crabs are collected by hand and returned to the ocean after being taken to a certified facility for blood harvesting.
