Although biomedical research involving dogs accounts for a small number of studies, this work has contributed to advancements in medical care for myriad conditions, including cancer, diabetes and heart disease, as well as treatments for injuries of war that affect veterans. Legislation and activism that compromise scientists' ability to work with dogs, even at the local level through municipal ordinances, has the potential to have sweeping consequences for public health.
