Researchers have placed ultrasonic recorders in Portage Valley, Alaska, to record sounds made by little brown bats at night and learn where they live and how they interact. The effort is part of an NIH-funded study of viruses in Alaska's bats, and study leader Doug Causey says while bats do carry viruses, they might need protection from humans more than we need protection from them.
