A study of fruit flies demonstrated that exposure to light is important to maintaining memories long term. Flies that were kept in total darkness did not retain memories, while flies exposed to both darkness and light did, researchers reported in The Journal of Neuroscience, and the human brain might have similar molecular mechanisms, lead author Takaomi Sakai says.
