Palm oil producing countries are complaining that new European limits for contaminants in refined oils are really an indirect trade barrier aimed specifically at their product. The EU has set a limit for glycidyl esters and will soon restrict 3-monochloropropane diol (3-MCPD), contaminants that can form during the refining process that the EU says may affect kidney function and male fertility.
