The palm oil industry is setting its sights on the region of Central Africa, where researchers from the Center for International Forestry Research argue it is possible to put policies in place early on to avoid the large-scale production found in Asia. The industry is in its infancy, they say, but, in the Congo, palm oil is a locally consumed product with a complex, existing supply chain, not an export.
