The Department of Veterans Affairs awarded a three-year, $11.4 million contract to Liberty IT Solutions to help increase providers' access to patient health data and improve care coordination via the agency's legacy VistA EHR system. Together with PGT Solutions and ManTech, Liberty will implement the second phase of Computerized Patient Record System enhancements, Liberty CEO Bill Greene said.
A misconfigured Amazon S3 storage bucket left 10,000 patient files at North Carolina-based MedCall Healthcare Advisors exposed online, the second time in a month that the vendor has dealt with such an incident. The exposure, which was discovered by a security researcher, compromised patient names, recordings of patient conversations with doctors and evaluations, personal health data, birthdates, postal addresses and Social Security numbers.

The consolidation of physician practices by larger organizations is expected to continue, writes Colin Hung. An emerging trend is patient data created from smartphone apps that will be used by physicians in the clinical setting. "It is important to note that there has been increasing financial pressure on practice owners as changes to reimbursements have eroded margins over the past several years," he writes.
Mayo Clinic's care network, which uses affiliations with other providers and helps coordinate care, has improved patient outcomes, according to Eric Crockett, vice chair of provider relations at Mayo Clinic and speaker at MGMA's annual conference. The network allows patients to obtain the "right care in the right place," Crockett said.
Fifty-two percent of health care consumers were given access to their online medical records by their providers in 2017, up from 42% in 2014, and 28% of them viewed their records one or more times during the past year, according to an ONC report. The findings, based on data from the National Cancer Institute's 2017 Health Information National Trends Survey, also showed that patients encouraged by providers to use online records were nearly twice as likely to view records than those who weren't, while a preference to speak directly to providers was cited by 76% of respondents as the main reason why they didn't access their online records.
Data from HIMSS Analytics' Logic Analyze showed that the number of CIO positions held by women in health care dropped from 32% in 2007 to 24% in 2017, but the emergence of the chief nursing informatics officer position may help alleviate the gender gap, with 166 hospital CNIOs in 2018 being registered nurses and 90% of RNs being women. Meanwhile, women in health information and management system jobs only received 83% of the pay given to their male counterparts, according to the 2018 HIMSS Compensation Survey.
