Having a pet dog in the first year of a child's life decreases the likelihood of long-term inflammatory diseases such as asthma, according to two Swedish studies. The research tracked 650,000 children and saw a 13% lower risk of asthma later in life for babies that lived with a dog in their first year, and residing on a farm cut the childhood asthma rate by 50%.
Having a pet is linked to career success for company executives, according to a Kelton Research study for Banfield Pet Hospital. The study found 93% of the 857 executives surveyed were raised with a pet, 78% partly attribute their success to growing up with a pet, 77% said business ideas were fostered by walking a pet and 62% attributed their ability to better relate to others to having a pet.
Natural Life's Chicken & Potato dry dog food has been recalled because of advanced levels of vitamin D. The dog food with a best-by code of Dec. 4, 2019, through Aug. 10, 2020, was sold in Alabama, California, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
The FDA is conducting bioequivalence studies to see whether the method can be used to reduce the number of terminal studies that must be conducted in dogs for veterinary and human drugs, and the dogs will receive preventive care and be socialized so they can be adopted after the studies end. The proposed trial, which is open for comment for 60 days, will involve testing drugs in three canine cohorts and comparing concentrations in blood samples with those of dogs treated with a similar, approved drug.
