SmartBrief food and beverage readers were drawn this week to news that US lawmakers have proposed a federal bill calling for restaurants that have greater than 50 employees to provide a notification of closing at least 60 days prior to shuttering. The legislation is sponsored by Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Schumer has cited restaurant chain Friendly’s abrupt closing of 23 locations in April as the reason for the creation of the bill.
Other restaurant news on this week’s most-clicked list included the increasingly popular trend of adding fried chicken offerings. Restaurants have created classic as well as innovative menu items by using unique flavors, designing drink pairings and even offering plant-based chicken alternatives.
Topping this week’s stories was a major strategic move by PepsiCo. The food and beverage company has announced its acquisition of BFY Brands, the producer of air-popped snacks PopCorners, Flex Protein Crisps and Flourish Veggie Crisps. Other consumer packaged goods firms’ corporate strategies also landed on the list; Hostess chose a new CFO as well as established a new executive position in charge of mergers and acquisitions, while Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey spotlighted the company’s Celebrate Failure Award, which serves as a reminder that failure happens in the quest to take risks and create innovative products.
CPG companies continued to dominate this week’s list with stories about new products. Nestle will be adding to its plant-based options next spring with new products that include Sweet Earth brand’s ground beef alternative: DiGiorno Rising Crust Meatless Supreme and Stouffer's Meatless Lasagna. General Mills also announced the small-scale release of its nondairy line of Oui by Yoplait yogurt with a nationwide debut set for 2020. Following the latest introduction of Oreo’s mystery flavor, the brand has revealed that the secret flavor was churro.
