Supermarket chain H.E. Butt has gained a national reputation and the news that it beat out Trader Joe’s to be named top US grocery retailer topped this week’s Top 10 list of most-read food-and-beverage stories among SmartBrief readers. The retailer is winning fans on a larger scale by stressing its Texas roots.

Also in grocery news, a story about vertical farming startup Plenty’s deals to supply hydroponically grown vegetables to Safeway and Whole Foods Market stores in the San Francisco market resonated with readers.

In CPG news this week, PepsiCo-owned Frito-Lay’s debut of Cheetos Popcorn in Cheddar and Flamin’ Hot flavors piqued readers’ attention, as did Kraft’s creation of a chocolate sweetener made from corn fiber.
