An old view on executive compensation

Leadership

SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in Smartbrief on Workforce — tracks feedback from leading managers and HR practitioners. We run the poll question each Wednesday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: Are your executives overcompensated?

  • Yes, across the board, 36%
  • Some are, but not all, 31%
  • Our executives are paid just right, 13%
  • Our executives aren’t paid enough, 13%
  • I don’t know, 8%

This may be the least surprising poll result ever. Executive compensation as it related to the average American wage has widened significantly over the last few decades. Even as many industry’s compensation has stayed flat, there are always questions from employees about the level of executive compensation. This is especially true when there is a down economy.
