A new analysis of US Census data shows that college graduates earned more in 2017 than their peers with less than a bachelor's degree in every US state. A separate study of federal data showed that those with bachelor's degrees earned $932 more per week, on average, than those without a degree.

Average spending per student was $12,201 in 2017 -- 3.7% higher than in 2016 -- according to data released this week by the US Census Bureau. Data shows that New York state spends the most per student at $23,091.

College enrollment has remained largely flat over the past decade, ranging between 66% and 70% during that period, according to data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The report also shows a slight decline in the number of students who earned bachelor's degrees who also were employed.

Data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center show that college graduation rates inched up 2.1 percentage points this year over 2016. The increase in six-year completion rates to 56.9% follows a two-year decline and surpasses the prerecession high of 56.1%, according to the analysis.

While 33% of college students overall who began pursuing a bachelor's degree in 2011-12 changed majors, 52% of students who originally studied math ended up majoring in something else, according to data from the Education Department's National Center for Education Statistics. Experts say that given the high employer demand for students with math degrees, institutions must do more to encourage students to stay in their major.
