The United Arab Emirates and Korea Electric Power have finished construction on Unit 1 at the Barakah nuclear power plant in the UAE, the country's first commercial nuclear power plant. Fuel loading is scheduled to begin in May.

Peter Dietrich, previously a senior vice president at Southern California Edison, has been tapped as the chief nuclear officer at Emirates Nuclear Energy. He will be responsible for supporting ENEC's subsidiary Nawah Energy, which will operate the Barakah nuclear power plant, and for training future leaders for the United Arab Emirates' nuclear program.

The EU's list of countries it deems to be tax havens no longer includes the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Panama, Tunisia, Mongolia, Macau, Grenada and Barbados.

Despite reports that South Korea must make a large payment to the United Arab Emirates to make up for a delay in the construction of its nuclear plant project, the South Korean government says that is not the case. "The report about the compensation is not true and no South Korean company has withdrawn from the project or gone bankrupt due to non-payment," the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy said.

A group of 10 students from the United Arab Emirates recently completed a nuclear energy internship in South Korea. The internship program, which provided learning and on-the-job training opportunities, was organized through a partnership between Emirates Nuclear Energy and Korea Electric Power's International Nuclear Graduate School.
