Fruits and vegetables are important to a healthy diet but can eat up from 40% to 50% of a household food budget while providing just 10% to 20% of calorie needs, said registered dietitian Danielle Fryer. Buying frozen fruits and vegetables when they are on sale is one option, but Fryer said other budget-friendly nutrition choices include beans and rice, eggs, natural peanut butter, milk and yogurt, and whole-wheat bread and pasta.
