International students and scholars at US colleges on F, J or M visas will begin accruing "unlawful presence" status from US Citizenship and Immigration Services the day after their studies end, putting their residency in jeopardy earlier. Previously, such visa holders began accruing their 180 days of "unlawful presence" after a formal finding of a violation was issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
