In-N-Out Burger ranked as consumers' favorite burger concept and quickservice chain, according to a Market Force survey of 11,500 people. Convenience store chain Wawa won the sandwich category, Chipotle Mexican Grill kept its lead among Mexican food fans, Chick-fil-A topped the chicken lovers' list for the fourth year, and Iowa-based Pizza Ranch came in first in the pizza category.

Momofuku founder David Chang said he spends time observing the staff whenever he dines at quickservice eatery In-N-Out, admiring the way the young employees work together seamlessly as a team. "It takes me like six months to train somebody who wants to be a chef to actually care about something like that," he said.

California-based In-N-Out Burger has grown to 32 eateries in Texas since entering the market in 2011 and now it aims to enter the Houston market, according to real estate firm CBRE. The regional chain, known for its burgers, fries and shakes, operates 321 units in six states.

A petition asking burger chain In-N-Out to add a veggie burger to the menu has attracted more than 28,000 supporters. The organizers of the petition, who plan to deliver it to In-N-Out president Lynsi Snyder, point out that other eateries such as Burger King and Chipotle have added vegetarian options.

California-based In-N-Out Burger has gained a national reputation despite refusing to grow beyond the five states that are within a day's drive of its three butcheries. The 67-year-old chain's menu is made up of just burgers, fries and shakes, and fans learn the inside jargon they need to order quickly. "Many people feel like they are part of something with In-N-Out. It still feels like a mom-and-pop operation," said food blogger Tom Bricker.
