Carol Spencer was Barbie's fashion designer for 36 years, starting in 1963, creating styles that changed with the times and influenced generations of better-known fashion designers including Bob Mackie, Jason Wu and Nicole Miller. Spencer's small hands made her well-suited for sewing tiny outfits, she says, and her figure was much like that of the iconic doll, which made it easy to get the proportions right.
