Tokyo Electric Power Holdings' first estimate of the annual amount of radioactive tritium to be removed from the Fukushima nuclear power plant cleanup site puts the volume between 27 trillion and 106 trillion becquerels. TEPCO estimates the radioactive water stored in the tanks at the site contain 860 trillion becquerels.

Foreign workers won't be used for cleanup work at the Fukushima nuclear plant, said Tokyo Electric Power. The company said differences in language and labor practices could lead to accidents and safety issues.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. will use a camera mounted to a rod-like device to grab melted debris at the Fukushima No. 2 reactor, testing for hardness. The assessment will help TEPCO form a plan to remove the debris.

Tokyo Electric Power's circulating-injection system, which is key to stabilizing the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, is now operating properly, the company said. The system decontaminates radioactive water and then reprocesses it.

Soon-to-be Tokyo Electric Power President Toshio Nishizawa said he will act to resolve the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis. "Since our firm was founded, the current crisis is unprecedented. I will do my best to settle the accidents, make compensation in a fair and quick manner, stabilize the supply of electricity and streamline the company's operations drastically," Nishizawa said.
