Groundwater at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina is being cleaned up using recycled iron filings from auto plants, said Savannah River Nuclear Solutions. "This system is designed to work for decades with little maintenance, as it has in other parts of the country," says Philip Prater of the Department of Energy's Savannah River Operations Office.

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions has received a 14-month, $1.5 billion contract extension from the US Department of Energy to manage the Savannah River Site. The company has further extensions available that could extend its contract until Sept. 2022.

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions has been contracted for planning and design of a plutonium pit production facility at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions wants to hire 1,200 new employees at the Savannah River Site for fiscal 2019, says chief executive Stuart MacVean. The SRS currently has approximately 11,700 employees.

The Savannah River Site's two major contractors have addressed the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board's concerns over the site's emergency preparedness by hiring more staff. Savannah River Nuclear Solutions and Savannah River Remediation also implemented new emergency preparedness actions and submitted assessment reports identifying areas for improvement.
