The Energy Department's nuclear cleanup office says the Savannah River Site has decommissioned 50 buildings, totaling more than 1 million square feet since 2008; with another 13 structures set to be demolished within the next 12 months. "As a result of this extensive number of deactivation and decommission projects across the site, we no longer need to incur the ongoing costs associated with these inactive and obsolete structures," says Steve Conner of Savannah River Nuclear Solutions.

A 2030 goal of producing 80 plutonium pits annually is a difficult timeline, says Stuart MacVean, president and CEO of Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, which would produce 50 pits annually at the Savannah River Site. "It's going to ask us to do in 10 years what would typically take 15 to 20 in today's environment," he says.

Savannah River Remediation's contract to handle liquid waste at the Savannah River Site is expected to be extended for 18 months. The Energy Department, which will issue the contract, ended a multiyear search for a new contractor in late February.

The Savannah River Site liquid waste contract solicitation, which has been in place since 2016, has been ended by the Energy Department. The cancellation comes as the department looks to combine liquid waste work with H-Canyon and L-Basin tasks, and Savannah River Remediation and Savannah River Nuclear Solutions will continue with their respective contracts until a new contractor is chosen.
