Architect Nona Yehia co-founded Vertical Harvest in downtown Jackson, Wyo., as a way to produce more food in a small space. The three-story vertical greenhouse launched four years ago and today it grows produce for four local grocery stores and 40 restaurants.

Associated Wholesale Grocers has turned to ReposiTrak to help keep track of out-of-stock items. The scan-based trading program informs suppliers of issues and ensures more accurate inventory replenishment.

Superior Grocers has opened a small-format concept called The Market By Superior in Los Angeles. The store features everyday necessities alongside cut meats, fresh produce and a tortilleria.

Grant Street Grocery in Casper, Wyo., listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, has reopened under new management in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its opening next year. "The store has a role of its own in the community," said co-owner Lindsey Grant, one of five who came together to invest in the neighborhood business after the previous owner closed it a year ago.

In Wyoming, school nutrition professionals say they were ahead of the curve in implementing federal regulations requiring healthier breakfasts. The standards, which took effect this year, establish rules regarding fruits and whole grains in breakfasts. However, one program opted to drop out of the federal meal program -- citing costs of implementing the standards -- and a recent survey by the School Nutrition Association showed 1% of school nutrition directors planned to opt out this year. Other districts say they are working to cut back on cafeteria waste.
