US colleges and universities may be falling behind in enrolling and graduating domestic Ph.D. students, according to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The data shows that the US is lagging behind countries such as Germany, South Korea and the United Kingdom, and experts say it could imperil future research.

US Education Department data shows the percentage of borrowers who began repaying loans on Oct. 1, 2015 and defaulted by Sept. 30, 2018, declined to 10.1%, the lowest percentage in seven years. The data represents a 6.5% drop over the previous three-year period, with the three-year metric -- known as the cohort default rate -- used by the government to determine whether colleges qualify to receive federal student aid.

The agency also wants the company to refrain from such medical promises without verification from the Food and Drug Administration. Pom's owners, Lynda and Stewart Resnick, have filed a federal lawsuit against the FTC, claiming the agency has gone beyond its powers and violated their First Amendment rights. "We stand behind the vast body of scientific research documenting the healthy properties of Wonderful variety pomegranate," the company said in a statement.
