In the two years since installing an artificial intelligence-driven command center, Tampa General Hospital's trauma center has improved efficiency and saved $40 million, says CEO John Couris. Average length-of-stay has been reduced by a half-day, emergency department diversion has been cut by 25%, bed capacity has been optimized, and Couris says the Florida hospital plans to expand the system to ambulatory and acute care units, as well as associated physician practices.

Tampa General Hospital and OnMed have partnered to put a self-contained telemedicine station in the hospital, providing employees with automated pharmaceutical services and virtual consultations with physicians. "By utilizing the OnMed Station within our employee base, we can ensure that our staff is prioritizing their wellness with access to instant care if needed," said Tampa General CEO John Couris.

Decision trees such as classification and regression trees are simple and intuitive but lack predictive power, and researchers at Penn Medicine have developed an additive tree that has better predictive performance than CART. "Although the additive tree is designed primarily to provide both the model interpretability and predictive performance needed for high-stakes applications like medicine, it also can produce decision trees represented by hybrid models between CART and boosted stumps that can outperform either of these approaches," the researchers wrote in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Burnout affects physicians, nurses and health care leaders, and the industry must measure work-related fatigue and create an environment of support and care for team members, writes Tampa General Hospital CEO John Couris. "Focusing on the care of your team (as well as yourself) is not only the right and most compassionate thing to do, it also makes strong business sense," Couris writes.

EHR vendor Cerner and post-acute services provider HealthSouth will create the Post-Acute Innovation Center in Alabama to develop evidence-based solutions to improve patient care management and care coordination in post-acute care settings. The center will use Cerner's data analytics capabilities and health IT solutions and HealthSouth's existing technology to develop the tools.
