A study in PLOS Medicine estimates that the health consequences of poor eating habits cost the US more than $50 billion annually, accounting for 18% of nationwide Type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease costs. Of the total, 84% goes to acute care, and costs are highest for people who are eligible for Medicaid and Medicare at $536 per person, followed by Medicare beneficiaries at $481 per person and $300 per person overall.
