Tokyo Electric Power is reviewing a government report that suggests a planned 36-foot seawall designed to protect the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant would be breached by tsunami waves over 66 feet. TEPCO says it will "analyze the impact on the ongoing preventive measures against tsunamis that the company has been taking."

Tokyo Electric Power is now estimating that it will take 12 years and $12.6 billion to remove the melted nuclear fuel from two of the three damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. TEPCO has not yet estimated the removal cost for the third reactor, Unit 1, for which no plan has been developed.

Tokyo Electric Power Holdings' first estimate of the annual amount of radioactive tritium to be removed from the Fukushima nuclear power plant cleanup site puts the volume between 27 trillion and 106 trillion becquerels. TEPCO estimates the radioactive water stored in the tanks at the site contain 860 trillion becquerels.

U.S. company Kurion has signed a contract with Japan's Tokyo Electric Power for the removal of strontium from the roughly 440,900 tons of radioactive water at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. "Strontium is the greatest emitter of radiation impacting site dose-rates," said Kurion founder and President John Raymont, adding that "reducing strontium in tank water stored on-site will significantly improve worker safety and reduces the risk to the surrounding environment." Kurion's technology will be used together with Toshiba's Advanced Liquid Processing System.

Tokyo Electric Power discovered a small new radioactive water leak at its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, according to a report. About a half gallon leaked from a pipe in the turbine building of the facility's No. 2 reactor, TEPCO said, adding that the water did not reach the plant's exterior.
