Americans exchanged some privacy for security after the Patriot Act was passed in response to the 9/11 attack, and they are being asked to do so again in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Whether the public is willing to accept the erosion of privacy permanently after the pandemic wanes is an open question, say health law professor Michelle Mello and computer science professor Madhav Marathe.
