Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt, a helicopter pilot with more than 3,000 flight hours, has become the first woman in the US Navy to command a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Since graduating from the US Naval Academy in 1994, Bauernschmidt has served with Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light 45, commanded Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 70 and had another historic first when she was named the first female executive officer on an aircraft carrier.
