The number of federal agencies believed to have been hit in the SolarWinds hack continues to rise, with the Energy Department and the National Nuclear Security Administration reportedly among those whose networks were infiltrated. Meanwhile, SolarWinds has deployed CrowdStrike's Falcon Endpoint Protection to secure its systems, and it says a hotfix on Tuesday brought its Orion Platform into compliance with federal security requirements.

VMware has completed the $2.7 billion acquisition of cloud-native platform provider Pivotal Software, making Pivotal a wholly owned subsidiary of VMware. Pivotal's offerings will be core to the VMware Tanzu portfolio of products and services, which are designed to help customers transform the way they build, run and manage their most important Kubernetes applications "from a single control point."

VMware has announced advancements in VMware Tanzu, a set of products and services designed to change the way enterprises build, run and manage software on Kubernetes. The private cloud leader released two offerings in beta: the VMware Tanzu Mission Control, a Kubernetes management plane, and Project Pacific, which is focused on transforming VMware vSphere "into a Kubernetes-native platform."

VMware led the pack with an 18% share of the software-defined WAN market in the second quarter, beating its year-earlier market share by 27%, research firm IHS Markit estimates. VMware, which acquired VeloCloud in late 2017, increased its SD-WAN sales to $40.1 million in Q2.

Microsoft is touting a disaster-recovery tool that it says lets VMware users replicate their physical workloads and private clouds and back them up to the Azure cloud. The service is available as a free 31-day trial.
