The US Army is investing $7 billion to produce 18 total prototypes for the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft and Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft programs, learning from the cancellation of the 2004 Comanche helicopter program which spent billions to develop only two prototypes. Maj. Gen. Walter Rugen says industry partners such as Boeing, Sikorsky and Bell have spent heavily on the programs and have "significant skin in the game."

The US Army is limiting competition for its Future Long Range Assault Aircraft to the Sikorsky-Boeing made SB-1 Defiant and Bell's V-280 Valor tiltrotor aircraft, with a draft request for proposals expected within weeks.
