The US Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin a $1.54 billion contract modification for the development of equipment for missile system demonstrations. The modification follows a 2019 award for the Intermediate Range Conventional Prompt Strike Weapon System flight demo program.

The US Army wants to test the full range of its developmental Precision Strike Missile next year in addition to including its Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon in the 2021 Project Convergence exercise. The range of the Precision Strike Missile is in excess of 310 miles.

General Atomics says it has demonstrated long-range precision fires capabilities with its Gray Eagle drone, equipping the drone with the Lynx Block 30A Long Range Synthetic Aperture Radar/Ground Moving Target Indicator. LRPF is a capability being developed by the Army.

The Army says it will need another $2 billion to $3 billion in funding annually to meet modernization goals in coming years. Long-range precision fires are a top priority for the Army.

The Army's Long-Range Precision Fires team is laying the groundwork for ramjet and hypersonic capabilities. "There is a real need to modernize our surface-to-surface fires at echelon to be able to guarantee a clear overmatch against any potential adversary both on the modern and future battlefield," said Brig. Gen. Stephen Maranian, citing needs for increases in range, lethality and volume.
