A group of University of California, Davis researchers are working in labs and fields to test crops in drought conditions and develop hardier varieties that can be grown with less water. Plant geneticists have studied crops from as far away as Iran and Afghanistan to study plants that have adapted to dry conditions and salty soils, and researchers at the National Clonal Germplasm Repository are working to adapt fruit and nut trees to California's drier growing conditions.
