The founding of the Coborn's grocery chain was, at first, a false start, and its century of success since then has also been marked by risks, including a failed 2008 foray into grocery delivery that later paid off big in the pandemic and its diversification into alcohol and fuel sales. The employee-owned grocer now has 9,000 workers at 60 stores and dozens of gas stations, liquor stores and pharmacies in four Midwestern states.
