The ongoing pandemic fueled a 50% increase in demand for groceries in 2020 and pushed up comparable sales by 15.8% for retailers with more than 100 stores, according to The Food Retailing Industry Speaks 2021 report from FMI. "Food retailers experienced significantly higher sales and transaction sizes during 2020, but expenses have also surged and impacted financial performance," said FMI President and CEO Leslie Sarasin. "And that situation continues in 2021."
