A study of more than 5,700 firefighters who responded to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City found weight loss may reduce their risk for lung disease, researchers reported in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. "The lessons from our investigation can be applied not only to firefighters but to the millions of city dwellers exposed to air pollution on a daily basis," said senior author Dr. Anna Nolan.

Registered dietitian Rachael Link writes that egg noodles are similar to regular pasta in nutritional content and often are enriched with vitamins and minerals, but they also may be higher in calories and contain gluten, which can be harmful for people with celiac disease. A retrospective study in BMJ Open Respiratory Research found more than two dozen metabolites that could predict which 9/11 World Trade Center firefighters would develop lung disease. Researcher Dr. Anna Nolan said the study also suggested dietary changes may help prevent lung function decline after exposure to smoke or toxic chemicals, and investigators plan to study these firefighters, comparing lung outcomes in those eating a standard diet with those on a Mediterranean diet.
