The civil trial of three former Wells Fargo executives accused of culpability in the bank's long-running fake-accounts scandal began on Monday. Greg Coleman, senior deputy comptroller for large bank supervision at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, testified that the executives were the bank's primary "lines of defense" against such risks and that its "incentive sales program was implemented without risk-management controls, without proactive monitoring and it essentially incented the bank employees to open fraudulent accounts, to provide misleading information to customers, resulting in significant harm."

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is asking banks to promote HelpWithMyBank.gov as part of National Financial Literacy Month, which runs through April 30. "Banks play an important role in supporting their communities' financial capabilities, particularly underserved and low-income communities where expanded access to credit and capital are most needed," said acting Comptroller of the Currency Blake Paulson.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency reached settlements with three former Wells Fargo executives who were there during its unauthorized account scandal, including six-figure fines. A Wells Fargo spokesperson noted the bank has made changes and is "doing what's necessary to regain the trust of all stakeholders."

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency's semiannual risk report names bank account scandals such as Wells Fargo's among concerns for the banking industry. Other risks cited include the financial-technology industry and the UK's planned exit from the EU.

Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Mark Warner, D-Va., are asking the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to revoke "golden parachute" compensation for former Wells Fargo executives John Stumpf and Carrie Tolstedt for their roles in the bank's unauthorized-account scandal. The senators' calls come after the regulator reversed its earlier agreement not to limit such payments.
