Unilever's plant-based ice cream on growth trajectory

The plant-based ice cream market is growing more than 20% annually, with sales accelerating in international markets such as Europe, Asia and Latin America, said Matt Close, executive vice president of global ice cream at Unilever. As plant-based formulations evolve and plant proteins achieve the same texture and taste as dairy-based ice cream, "we'll see even more explosive growth," said Close.

Plant-based diet vs. low-fat diet for CVD risk reduction

A study presented at the Nutrition Live Online 2021 virtual meeting found that a nutritious plant-based diet, but not a diet consisting mainly of low-fat foods, was linked to a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease among adults -- though both diets were associated with reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The findings, based on data from 4,700 adults, also showed that a nutritious plant-based diet was linked with a reduced risk for coronary heart disease and stroke.

"With Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods and other products coming on the market, there's a huge interest in plant-based foods for improved sustainability, health and ethical reasons," says food scientist David McClements of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
