SunOpta buys plant-based milk brands from Hain Celestial

Hain Celestial has sold its Dream and WestSoy alt-dairy milk brands for $33 million to SunOpta, which has been co-manufacturing both brands for several years. "We considered this business to be non-core within our North American business," said Mark Schiller, Hain Celestial CEO, while SunOpta CEO Joe Ennen said the deal will help the company meet growing demand for shelf-stable, plant-based milks.

JOI is planning to advance its mission to offer plant-based milk consumers a more sustainable option by releasing a zero-waste product that uses 100% compostable packaging, said CEO Hector Gutierrez. JOI -- which stands for just one ingredient -- is packaged as a plant-based, shelf-stable milk concentrate, and the brand increased sales 600% in 2020, Gutierrez added.

Study examines dietary choices tied to heart disease risk

A study in the journal Cardiovascular Research found that consuming less salt and animal proteins and consuming more plant-based foods could help decrease the risk of heart disease. The researchers also found that drinking three cups of tea or coffee per day, as well as eating small amounts of cheese and yogurt, was linked with a reduced heart disease risk, while drinking soft drinks and diet drinks was linked to an increased risk.
