The Federal Communications Commission should raise the qualifying download speeds for broadband from 25 Mbps to a minimum of 100 Mbps, Next Century Cities, Public Knowledge and Common Cause said in an FCC filing. Video streaming is one major impetus for the proposed change, as are telehealth and education in rural areas.
AT&T is partnering with Purdue University on construction of an Indianapolis lab that will cater to researchers and entrepreneurs, the organizations announced. Bill Soards, president of AT&T's Indiana division, says that the Purdue Research Lab will conduct tests on expanding 5G uses in such areas as manufacturing and agriculture.
Ajit Pai's plan for a public auction of the 3.7-4.2 gigahertz C-band spectrum came without any mention of fixed wireless in rural areas, notes a blog post by CCG Consulting. There's still time to address the rural digital divide, as Pai, who leads the Federal Communications Commission, has talked about since he made the announcement in a short letter.
