  • NSA: Tread carefully on cyberdefense
Companies and the government need to be very careful that they don't encourage groups to take the law into their own hands when it comes to stopping cyberattacks, warned National Security Agency deputy director Chris Inglis. The U.S. needs to exercise powers at its disposal, such as sanctions and criminal charges, but, he said recently, "we don't want to encourage vigilantism." He also warned that just defending cybernetworks won't work. "If your security depends upon a static advantage and the static nature of compliance-based standards, your heart's going to be broken on a fairly regular basis," Inglis said. • House: DOD must prove intelligence shop deserves funds
The Pentagon's new Defense Clandestine Service will see its funding capped unless it can show that the work being done in that intelligence operation isn't already being carried out by other agencies, House lawmakers said. The House Armed Services Committee's intelligence and emerging threats subcommittee is holding back half the funding for the intelligence operation until it gets assurances that it is not duplicating work. • SkyWest structures Embraer deal for flexibility, CFO says
SkyWest has ordered 100 Embraer aircraft, with up to 60 of the aircraft conditional on securing new business with carriers. "Our deal with Embraer allows for delivery slots so we can market such to the major airlines, and then as they sign up for CPA [capacity purchase agreement] deals we can simply apply the delivery slots that have been set aside," said SkyWest CFO Michael Kraupp. AviationWeek.com/Aviation Daily (5/22) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Mars One CEO: Don't have babies on Mars
A Martian colony would be too hazardous a place for children, warns Bas Lansdorp, the leader of an effort to establish a colony on the Red Planet in 2023. It's not clear if pregnancy would be possible on the planet or what effect high radiation levels would have on an unborn child, scientists say. "We are not in the business of telling people what to do, but astronauts are very responsible people. When they realize they are living in a dangerous place, they will know what to do, that it's not right," said Lansdorp, co-founder and CEO of the Netherlands-based nonprofit Mars One.
