The Supreme Court on Thursday blocked the Biden administration's COVID-19 vaccine-or-test requirement for businesses with at least 100 workers but allowed a similar requirement for health care workers at facilities receiving federal funding to stand. President Joe Biden criticized the court's decision to overturn OSHA's vaccine mandate and called on employers to proceed with their own requirements "to protect their workers, customers and communities."

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions voted 13 to 8 to send Robert Califf's nomination as FDA commissioner to the full Senate for consideration. Califf, who previously led the FDA during the Obama administration, is expected to be confirmed with bipartisan backing.

HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra has ordered CMS to reevaluate its Medicare Part B premium increase for 2022 now that the price of Alzheimer's drug Aduhelm has been slashed. CMS has said the increase would be $170.10, up from $148.50 in 2021, the largest hike in the history of the program.

Over 14M sign up for ACA coverage as deadline nears
HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said Thursday that 14.1 million people had signed up for Affordable Care Act coverage through federal or state-based exchanges as of last week, an increase of 2 million. The deadline for ACA coverage enrollment is Saturday.

Dr. Albert Bourla, Pfizer chairman and CEO, discussed how innovations in the quest to develop the drugmaker's COVID-19 vaccine led to novel, more extensive advancements in health care at the US Chamber of Commerce's State of American Business 2022 event. "The new wave of innovation can only be supported if we support this ecosystem of thousands of small biotech companies that exist -- particularly in this country -- and academia and institutions like ours," Bourla said.
