Talks with Taliban could help U.S. withdrawal, Hagel says
The departure of U.S. troops from Afghanistan could be eased with peace talks between the U.S. and the Taliban, says Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. Peace talks "are worth the risk," Hagel said. The White House announcement that the U.S. will start such conversations with the Taliban has drawn sharp criticism from Afghan President Hamid Karzai. The Hill/DEFCON Hill blog (6/20)

Army drill not preparation for Syrian action, official says
The U.S. Army is preparing a drill designed to train troops to deal with chemical weapons attacks, but possible U.S. military action in Syria is not the purpose, says service spokeswoman Lt. Col. Peggy Kageleiry. "They have been planning this exercise for months and have not changed the scenario to reflect current situations across the globe," according to Kageleiry. Surveillance leaks prompt review of background-check firm
Revelations by a civilian contractor that the federal government is conducting surveillance on citizens have prompted the government to examine USIS, the firm it hires to check the backgrounds of potential employees, according to this article. Office of Personnel Management Inspector General Patrick McFarland told congressional lawmakers that he believes there were problems in USIS' check of Edward Snowden, the whistle blower who released secret documents about the surveillance. Rockwell hopes to win cockpit avionics work for 777X
Rockwell Collins is hoping to beat out rival Honeywell in a bid to create the cockpit avionics on Boeing's 777X, whose development is about to begin. The upgrade of Boeing's biggest twin-engine plane offers a prime opportunity for whichever contractor gets that work, as the 777 is a top seller and it's unlikely Boeing will work on another new plane anytime soon.
