WCUCOM breaks ground on Institute of Primary Care | VCOM, veterinary college collaborate on One Health | UNE, institute explore needs of aging population
Work has begun on the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine's Institute of Primary Care, "a singular investment that will have generational benefit for all Mississippians," said WCUCOM Dean Italo Subbarao, DO.
The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine's collaborative Center for One Health Research promotes public health by researching intersections of human, animal and environmental health. "A microorganism that's causing a problem in humans, it didn't necessarily start in humans," said Mohamed Seleem Ph.D., the center's director.
The University of New England and the Roux Institute at Northeastern University explored the needs of older adults in a two-day summit on aging in place. "Hearing from community members about the problems they were facing really put it into perspective that, as medical students, we might think we know what our patients need and what they might be facing, but we really don't unless we start a conversation," said medical student Gabrielle McGeorge of the UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine medical student Angela Ellis was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer after after seeking a second opinion about a lump she found. Patients know their bodies best, and if a health care provider doesn't agree, people should be willing to pursue the issue, Ellis said.
