OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL EDUCATION
About half of Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine graduates choose to practice in areas with shortages of health care professionals, helping meet the health care needs of rural populations and urban areas. "OSU-COM emphasizes innovation and passion for community, and that helps produce graduates eager to work in these medical deserts," said OSU-CHS President Johnny Stephens, PharmD.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in Billings, Mont., to celebrate the opening the Rocky Vista University Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine. MCOM will help fill the need for physicians in Montana, where the Health Resources and Services Administration has designated all counties as having shortages of health care professionals.

West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine hosted the Clinical Anatomy Summer Experience camp and the Just Say KNOW to Lifestyle Medicine camp to encourage future health care professionals. CASE camp focused on anatomy, and Just Say KNOW focused on culinary medicine, nutrition and exercise.

Faculty at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine have secured approximately $1.4 million in funding to support research about a rare pediatric brain cancer, heart failure and the link between obesity and hypertension. The grants include the first to NYITCOM from the Defense Department.

The CARE Coalition in Greenbrier County, W.Va., emphasizes cooperation and collaboration between community groups and organizations to help people with substance abuse disorder. "We figure if we can help them and improve their quality of life, and give them treatment and recovery, it's better for us all," said Joyce Martin of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine's Center for Rural and Community Health.

Scent dogs rapidly detect COVID-19

A review in the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine found that scent dogs detected COVID-19 in symptomatic, pre-symptomatic, and asymptomatic patients, with better sensitivity and faster than current RT-PCR or antigen tests. "[W]e believe that scent dogs deserve their place as a serious diagnostic methodology that could be particularly useful during pandemics, potentially as part of rapid health screenings in public spaces," the researchers said.
