Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers have found that 3D-printed molds for precast concrete are more cost-effective than conventional wood molds. The researchers developed a techno-economic model that compared the costs of each method, evaluating materials, equipment, energy and labor, and determined the 3D-printed molds are faster to produce and the composites can be recycled. Additionally, optimizing mold designs reduces energy demand and carbon emissions.
